Developmental Editing
Includes structural editing

Developmental editing is the first step in the editing process. This is a big-picture edit, focusing on Goal-Motivation-Conflict (GMC), transitions, character development, pacing, plot, dialogue, setting, point of view, and voice. Concrete observations and suggestions will be made so your revisions can address the elements that aren’t quite working. I will also look at the structure of your manuscript. Could a scene be moved? Is this scene helping move the plot forward? Is it needed?
No mechanical edits are made within the document at this stage. All suggestions and observations will be through the Commenting feature in Word along with an extensive editor’s note.
A line edit and/or copyedit is highly recommended after this service.
Turnaround time for an average manuscript of 50k words is 3–4 weeks.
$0.015 per word.
All developmental editing projects have a minimum flat rate of $150.
Line Editing
Includes substantive editing

Line editing takes place after developmental editing and before copyediting or proofreading. This stage focuses on strengthening voice, emotional impact, and narrative flow while polishing the language at a sentence and paragraph level. It includes refining word choice, tightening prose, revising awkward or unclear passages, smoothing transitions, and ensuring rhythm of the writing supports the story’s pacing and tension.
Substantive (content) editing is also addressed during this stage if needed, with attention to clarity, coherence, and emotional effectiveness. Substantive editing reviews the context and makes changes to ensure the information is accurate and clear with fact-checking.
There will be extensive corrections with minimal comments made throughout your manuscript.
Line editing does not follow a style guide, so it’s highly recommended to have copyediting or proofreading completed after this service.
Turnaround time for an average manuscript of 50k words is 12–16 business days.
$0.0085 per word.
All copyediting projects have a minimum flat rate of $100.
Copyediting
The Five Cs of Copyediting: clear, correct, concise, comprehensible, and consistent.

Copyediting is done after developmental and line editing and follows The Chicago Manual of Style. This service applies a professional eye to correct errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, factual consistency, plot, and timeline, while improving the overall flow of your manuscript.
There will be extensive corrections and comments made by me throughout your manuscript with suggestions to improve the clarity of expression.

A proofread is highly recommended after this service.

Turnaround time for an average manuscript of 50k words is 10–14 business days.
$0.007 per word.
All copyediting projects have a minimum flat rate of $90.

Proofreading
Proofreading is the final step in the editing process and follows The Chicago Manual of Style. This service includes a careful review of style, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and word usage. Proofreading is the final read-through of your edited manuscript. It is assumed at this point that your manuscript has already undergone previous rounds of editing and should contain only minimal errors.

I proofread directly in Word or Google Docs, and I also offer PDF proofreading using Adobe Acrobat for authors who prefer working with finalized layouts or formatted pages.

It is possible I will still leave comments throughout the manuscript during proofreading, especially at the scenes I adore.

Turnaround time for an average manuscript of 50k words is 5–7 business days.
$0.005 per word.
All proofreading projects have a minimum flat rate of $70.
Blurb Editing
Book blurbs can be understandably overwhelming to write after all the time and effort put into your novel. These blurbs are a crucial aspect of book sales—especially if you self-publish primarily via e-books. Blurbs with grammatical mistakes can really determine if someone chooses to read your novel.
Blurb editing includes checking for clarity, flow, spelling, syntax, and grammar. Blurbs are typically 200-300 words, and they should be concise, clear, and comprehensible.
